'The body is a great instrument for discovering life'

Rena Mirecka, a founding member of Polish director Jerzy Grotowski's Theatre Laboratorium (Laboratory Theatre), is working on The Way, a paratheatrical research exploring the concepts of theater being a complete spiritual and somatic union.
She spoke to Eralokkumar( Khoji Patrakar)

What are you exploring in The Way?
Life is a storehouse of energy and man has to learn to tap this energy to find his place in the universe.
Material energy is only a part of this huge subconscious force.
Our awareness and existence depends on the developments of this energy spiritual, physical and material.

How important is this energy in terms of theatre?
This energy is all about communication through the body, mind and soul.
This energy will help man overcome barriers that divide people.
There has to be a collective transformation of awareness aimed at the development of common communication.

You were associated with Grotowski's productions like Apocalypsis Cum Figuris, Akropolis and The Constant Prince. What is unique about his theatre?
Grotowski never wanted any divide between the audience from the actors.
He believed that there should not be any distance between the two.
He felt this very strongly as the coming together of the actor and the audience created a different kind of energy during the performance.
This is obviously different from ordinary theatre where there is less participation of the audience with the theatrical process.
Grotowski was never obsessed with techniques. He understood theatre in its totality, including its techniques. His stress was more on action and the final theatrical fallout was an amalgamation of many schools of thoughts.

How was he able to present Kalidasa's Shakuntala to an entirely European audience?
The idea germinated through a fusion of Indian and European cultures.
Shakuntala may belong to an essentially Oriental milieu, but Grotowski used his imagination to customise it for an essentially European experience.

How much is bodily technique necessary in theatre? What is plastic exercise that you have conceptualised and developed?
The body is the instrument for creating the outer and the inner processes. Like a guitar, it has to have a good carriage. The body should not think heavy, or be afraid, but preserve the authentic process of life: the somatic body, the psychological body, the spiritual body and the emotional body. We are in relation and communication with each other through inner action. It is a great instrument for discovering life, and not the imitation of it.

What is the state of the Laboratory Theatre now?
The Laboratory Theatre in Europe is dead, as it is in Poland. It is not alive because very little research work is being conducted by directors. Extensive research is important behind every production or performance.
